Your numbers stay in this browser so they're here next time. They're never sent to us or anyone else. Clear deletes them.

Your numbers, not a quote

This calculator does arithmetic on the figures you enter. It is an estimate to help you see your own month. It is not accounting or tax advice, not a quote, not a market rate, and not a representation of what any load will pay. City DD Logistics Inc. does not guarantee rates, load availability or earnings. Two tools, two jobs

Before the load. After the month.

Gross is what the broker paid. Profit is what you kept.

Why both

Most owner-operators know their gross by heart and have never seen their profit. The cost per mile calculator gives you the floor to check a load against before you say yes. This one looks back at a whole month, including the costs that don't show up on any single load: the truck payment, insurance, the empty miles between loads and the fees. Use both, and the rate on the board stops being a guess.

Questions carriers ask

Profit, answered straight.

How do I know if my truck is making money?

Add up everything the loads paid you for the month, then take away every cost: the fixed ones that come whether you roll or not (truck payment, insurance, plates and permits, ELD) and the running ones (fuel, repairs and tires, tolls, driver pay, factoring and dispatch fees). What's left is what the truck made before income tax. If you drive it yourself, that's also your pay, so it has to cover your living costs too.

What's the difference between this and the cost per mile calculator?

They answer two different questions. The cost per mile calculator is for before you take a load: it tells you what a load has to pay per loaded mile to cover your costs. This profit calculator is for after the month: it shows whether the truck actually made money, and where the money went.

What are break-even miles?

The miles you need to run in a month, at your current rate and running costs, to cover your fixed costs. Each mile earns what the load pays minus what that mile costs you in fuel, repairs, driver pay and fees, and break-even is your fixed costs divided by that. If a mile costs more to run than it pays, there is no break-even: more miles only make the month worse, and the rate has to change.

Why does it ask for empty miles separately?

Because nobody pays you for them, but they still burn fuel, wear tires and use your hours. The calculator prices them: it shows how much of your running cost went on empty miles this month, which is usually the first place money leaks.

Will it tell me if my numbers are wrong?

It checks them. It flags costs that look missing (like insurance or repairs left empty), figures that look unusually low or high for your type of truck, and signs that kilometres were typed as miles or the other way round. It can't see your receipts, so check the totals against your fuel card, settlement and bank statements.

Can I use kilometres and Canadian dollars?

Yes. Switch the unit to kilometres at the top and every result is shown per kilometre. Use any currency, as long as you use the same one for everything.

Do you see or keep my numbers?

No. The calculator runs in your browser. It remembers your figures in this browser so they're still there next time, and the Clear button deletes them. They're never sent to us, to Google or to anyone else.
